Merkel's Rival Offers Merz a Migrant 'U-Turn' Deal

After the machete attack in Aschaffenburg, with two fatalities, the AfD’s chairwoman and candidate for the chancellorship, Alice Weidel, offers a collaboration to the Union’s chancellor candidate, Friedrich Merz (CDU), in the migration issue, as reported by the “Bild” (Friday edition) under reference to the document.

Weidel reacts in the two-page letter directly to Merz’s announcement, who had announced a “soonest program” for his “first day as Chancellor” on Thursday, stating: “The rejection of all migrants without valid entry papers at the German borders.”

Weidel writes to Merz, according to “Bild”, “The coming parliamentary week in the German Bundestag offers an opportunity that should not be left unused.” The next Bundestag session is on the following Wednesday.

Weidel further states: “In a state of political responsibility, I therefore appeal to you: Let us pass the necessary resolutions without further delay to implement what citizens now rightly expect from politics.” Merz’s announced “migration policy shift” is “a good sign”, according to Weidel, the AfD and the Union apparently sharing the same assessment of the situation.

Weidel offers to vote on the following points: “Lackless strict border controls and absolute rejections of illegal migrants, substantial deportations and repatriations in the responsibility of the Federal Government, additional competencies for the Federal Police, and for unconditional detention for deportation”.

In an indirect reference to the Union’s wall of resistance against the AfD, Weidel writes that many of what Merz has now announced “could have been decided on the basis of initiatives from my and your faction” long ago. Weidel: “We and I are always available for a coordinating conversation.” According to the “Bild”, it was said in Union circles that the letter was taken note of.
