Merkel Praises Holocaust Survivor Margot Friedländer's Legacy Against Group-Based Hostility

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) has praised the achievements of the late Holocaust survivor Margot Friedländer. In an interview with Bild, Merkel said, “We can never be grateful enough that Margot Friedländer had the strength to tell her story of suffering and survival. With that, she bore witness.” Friedländer, who passed away at the age of 103, moved back to her birth city of Berlin after decades as an emigrant in New York. She spoke out against exclusion, devaluation, racism, antisemitism and all forms of group-based hostility, believing that it was of utmost importance to win young people over to these values. “No phrase from this legacy is more impactful than Margot Friedländers own words, which she repeated until the end: ‘Be human'” said Merkel.
