Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed understanding for the ongoing demonstrations in Israel protesting against the Gaza conflict. Speaking at an event in Schwerin, co-hosted by the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” and the “Ostsee-Zeitung” on Tuesday evening, Merkel stated that her current sympathies lie with those advocating for a ceasefire.
Acknowledging the necessity for Israel to strengthen its security, Merkel highlighted the complexities of the situation. She noted Hamas’s reported tactic of utilizing civilians as shields, positioning military installations within civilian infrastructure such as hospitals, schools and kindergartens. This, she stressed, presented Israel with a uniquely challenging dilemma.
However, Merkel also conveyed reservations regarding the Israeli government’s approach. She described Prime Minister Netanyahu’s conduct of the conflict as being “very, hard, I would almost say heartless.
Regarding remarks made by current German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), who suggested Israel was performing a potentially difficult task on behalf of others, Merkel adopted a measured tone. She stated that individuals had varying methods of expression and each person felt empowered to communicate as they deemed appropriate and that the sentiment, while direct, should be recognized as such.
