The ongoing debate surrounding the potential delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine has intensified, with Green Party leader Franziska Brantner accusing Chancellor Friedrich Merz of a stark and unsettling shift in policy. Brantner’s critique, delivered to RTL and ntv, highlights a perceived contradiction between Merz’s previous staunch advocacy for Taurus delivery while in opposition and his subsequent silence on the matter since assuming the chancellorship.
“When I was in Ukraine, everyone asked me, ‘What happened to Mr. Merz?’ And it’s true” Brantner stated. “As he was in opposition, he seemed to propose a motion in parliament every week urging the government to supply Taurus missiles. Since becoming Chancellor, I haven’t heard a single word from him on the subject.
The pointed remarks underscore a growing tension within the German political landscape regarding the level of support being provided to Ukraine amidst the escalating conflict. While acknowledging that Taurus delivery represents one avenue for bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities, Brantner’s broader concern is about Germany’s overall commitment to protecting Ukraine in what she describes as a brutal, increasingly drone and artillery-dominated war.
“We have a significant task as Germany” she emphasized, suggesting the current strategy falls short of expectations. Her criticism extends beyond the Taurus issue, questioning whether Germany is genuinely fulfilling its promises and demonstrating adequate action to safeguard Ukraine. The lack of concrete measures, according to Brantner, casts a shadow on Germany’s proclaimed solidarity with Ukraine and raises serious questions about the government’s strategic priorities. Analysts suggest Brantner’s comments are intended to pressure the Chancellor’s administration and spark a renewed national discussion on Germany’s role and responsibilities in the ongoing conflict.
