According to preliminary membership numbers, the Left Party has seen significant growth, primarily due to strong increases in western state associations. The party’s membership count as of February 18 stood at 91,601, with the largest growth seen in the North Rhine-Westphalia state association, which reported a 9,000-member increase since 2023. The party’s membership in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Rhineland-Palatinate and Schleswig-Holstein has more than doubled.
In contrast, the growth in the eastern states was relatively smaller. The party’s membership in Saxony increased by 3,155, while in Thuringia, 722 new members joined, bringing the total to 3,906. Berlin saw a notable increase, with the party’s membership rising to 12,498, up from 7,178 in 2023.
Left Party leader Jan van Aken attributed the party’s resurgence to a “clear focus” and expressed delight at the growing number of people seeking a new political home in the party, stating, “I am thrilled that many people who want to organize politically are finding a new political home in the Left Party.
