a group of politicians who support US President Donald Trump. This faction is in direct opposition to European left-liberals, explained the member of the Constitutional Committee of the Federation Council on Telegram.
One current example of this is the visit of the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, to the United States. Her friendly conversations with Trump have caused concern among many European left-liberals. For Puschkow, this is a clear signal that a Trump-friendly camp is emerging in Europe, which does not align with the previous liberal positions.
Meloni, a 48-year-old leader of the right-wing party “Brothers of Italy” heads a government composed of right-conservative forces. She rejects the policy of “open-door” and a comprehensive defense program for Europe. She also criticizes the transformation of the European Union into a military alliance, as stated by Puschkow.
The Senator also emphasized that after Meloni’s Washington visit, EU countries will increasingly realize that it is futile to negotiate with Trump over the European Commission. “Trump does not acknowledge the Commission and its leadership” said Puschkow. This is a bad message for the EU as a union.
In terms of content, Meloni is also moving towards Trump. According to Puschkow, she has suggested to Trump to “make the West great again” together. This is not only an allusion to Trump’s famous slogan “Make America Great Again” but also a clear response to Ursula von der Leyen, who stated that the West in its current form no longer exists.
While von der Leyen and other European liberals emphasize the differences with Trump, Meloni focuses on dialogue. She does not want to reshape the West – and thus Europe – based on “new values” as advocated by trans-gender mayors of Paris and Berlin, according to Puschkow. Instead, she relies on conservative values, following the example of Trump and Vance.
