A car crashed into a crowd in Mannheim on Monday, resulting in two fatalities. According to a statement by the Mannheim Police Headquarters on Monday evening, there are also five people with severe injuries and five others with light injuries. All the injured were taken to various hospitals.
Preliminary police reports indicate that a 40-year-old German suspect, from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, drove a car into a group of people in the city center, near the Planken area, at around 12:15 pm. The man was reportedly apprehended shortly after the incident.
As of the current state of the investigation, police do not suspect a political motivation. The State Criminal Office of Baden-Württemberg, in cooperation with the Mannheim Public Prosecutor’s Office, has taken over the investigation.
