Mandatory Year Gains Support

The President of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), Marcel Fratzscher, has voiced support for a proposal by Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) to introduce a societal service year. Describing the suggestion as “clever and balanced” Fratzscher emphasized the need for all segments of society to share responsibility, particularly during times of crisis.

Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” Fratzscher elaborated that this obligation shouldn’t be limited to younger generations. He argued for the inclusion of a societal service year for retirees, highlighting that present-day challenges require comprehensive societal engagement, regardless of past experiences.

The proposal, championed by Merz, follows a recent call from the CDU for a universal, mandatory service year for both men and women in Germany. He reiterated this position during an appearance on the ARD-Talkshow hosted by Caren Miosga, further solidifying the party’s commitment to the initiative.
