The police in Manchester have classified the attack on a synagogue on Thursday as an act of terrorism. Laurence Taylor, head of the police’s counter-terrorism department, confirmed the classification in a statement released this afternoon, describing the incident as “a devastating act” targeting the Jewish community during the observance of Yom Kippur, a significant religious holiday.
Authorities have identified the perpetrator and have taken two additional individuals into custody as part of the ongoing investigation. Details regarding the individuals involved have not yet been released for security reasons.
The attack resulted in the deaths of the suspected perpetrator and two others. In addition, three individuals remain in critical condition, according to police reports.
The incident began Thursday morning with emergency calls reporting a vehicle colliding with pedestrians and a subsequent knife attack. Police responded to the scene and ultimately discharged firearms, neutralizing the suspected perpetrator.
Synagogue attendees who were present during the attack initially sheltered inside the building before being safely evacuated. Law enforcement continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and is offering support to the victims, their families and the broader community.
