A Swiss man has been fined for insulting the head of the German CDU, Friedrich Merz, on the social media platform X. The 60-year-old from the canton of Glarus was fined CHF 500 and ordered to pay CHF 650 in court costs. The fine is conditional, meaning he will only have to pay it if he commits another offense. The Glarner prosecutor’s office brought charges against him after Merz filed a complaint through his lawyer. Merz has taken action against other users who insulted him on X, resulting in searches of their homes and seizure of their devices. However, his approach to online insults has been criticized in Germany for being too focused on legal battles instead of political debates. Despite this, Merz seems determined to continue his strategy.
