A majority of Germans believe that access to social media should be prohibited for minors under the age of 16. This is the result of a survey conducted by the Infas Institute for the weekly newspaper “Die Zeit”. According to the survey, 36 percent of respondents oppose a ban on social media access for minors. The highest level of agreement with the proposal is among 18- to 24-year-olds, with 82 percent supporting restrictions on access for minors. Minors were not included in the survey.
In November, Australia implemented a legislative ban on social media access for those under 16, sparking global discussions. Infas conducted the survey for “Die Zeit” in January 2025, polling 1,001 individuals across the country.
