Majority of Europeans willing to boycott US products over customs policy

According to a survey conducted by the Swiss online retailer Galaxus, many Europeans are willing to boycott US products like Coca-Cola, Nike shoes, or Mars bars due to the US customs policy. Over 60% of the surveyed consumers expressed their support for avoiding the purchase of US products if there were to be US tariffs. However, they plan to do so only if the price of European alternatives is favorable.

The survey, conducted by the opinion research institute Yougov on behalf of Galaxus, a subsidiary of the Swiss retail conglomerate Migros, was reported by the SZ. A total of 5,263 people in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and Italy were surveyed between the end of April and the beginning of May.

The survey found that older individuals, particularly those over 60, are more likely to opt for European products when faced with US tariffs, as opposed to younger individuals under 30. Swiss, Austrian and Italian respondents were more inclined to choose European alternatives, while German and French respondents were not as convinced. Notably, a significant number in these countries do not plan to specifically seek out European alternatives.

Furthermore, the survey suggests that the personal wallet remains a more important factor than the boycott, as the majority in all countries are willing to pay more for products originating from the US. Interestingly, EU citizens are more supportive of measures against US tariffs compared to Swiss citizens.
