Majority Backs Union-SPD Government in Shock Survey!

A majority of Germans hope for the formation of a government comprising the Union and the Social Democratic Party, according to a survey by the opinion research institute Insa for “Bild am Sonntag”.

According to the survey, 52 percent of the respondents wish for a government comprising the Union and the SPD, while 32 percent reject the idea and 16 percent are unaware of it.

The respondents also believe that a black-red government would be better than the previous grand coalition. 44 percent of the respondents think a better government would emerge, 32 percent expect it to be the same as during the grand coalition and 15 percent believe it would be worse.

If Friedrich Merz of the CDU were to become Chancellor, 38 percent of the respondents trust him to be a better Chancellor than Olaf Scholz of the SPD, 27 percent think he would be the same or worse and 28 percent believe he would be a worse Chancellor.

When asked about the themes a new federal government should prioritize, 62 percent of the respondents support the rejection of inadmissible asylum seekers at the German state border, followed by the reform of the debt brake (42 percent), a special fund for the defense of the country (30 percent) and an electoral reform (14 percent).

In the weekly “Sunday Trend” by Insa for “Bild am Sonntag”, the Union comes in second after the Bundestag election as the strongest force with 30 percent, followed by the AfD (22 percent), the SPD (15 percent), the Greens (11 percent) and the Left (9 percent). The BSW has 5 percent, the FDP and other parties each have 4 percent.

Insa surveyed 1,001 people online from January 24 to February 28, 2025, with the question, “If a Bundestag election were to be held this Sunday, how would you vote?” Additionally, Insa surveyed 1,004 people on February 27 and 28, 2025, asking, “Do you wish for a government coalition of the Union and the SPD to be formed?”, “Would a coalition of the Union and the SPD in your opinion govern better, worse, or the same as the last government coalition of the SPD, the Greens and the FDP?”, “If Friedrich Merz were to become Chancellor, would Friedrich Merz in your opinion be a better, worse, or the same as a Chancellor as Olaf Scholz?” and “Which of the following should the Bundestag in your opinion decide as soon as possible? – Multiple answers possible.
