A majority of Germans support Germany’s weapons deliveries to Ukraine, according to a survey conducted by the Mannheim-based research group Wahlen for the ZDF magazine “Frontal”.
Sixty-seven percent of respondents back Germany’s military support for Ukraine, with 27 percent advocating for even more military assistance from Germany. Forty percent of those polled believe that Germany should continue to support Ukraine as it has been, while 27 percent think that Germany should provide less military aid.
The survey reveals a significant regional divide, with a higher level of support in the western regions of Germany. In the west, 42 percent of respondents support maintaining the current level of military support and 28 percent advocate for increased support, resulting in a total of 70 percent in favor of continued support. In the eastern regions, a majority of 53 percent still support Germany’s military backing for Ukraine, with 20 percent calling for increased support and 33 percent in favor of maintaining the current level.
The survey also shows that a majority of Germans, 59 percent, would support the German military’s participation in a potential European mission to secure a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, while 35 percent are opposed to the idea.
Regional differences emerge again, with a larger majority of western Germans, 61 percent, in favor of the German military’s involvement, compared to 45 percent in the eastern regions. On the other hand, a significant 50 percent of eastern Germans oppose the idea of the German military’s participation, compared to 32 percent in the west.
The survey was conducted by the research group Wahlen from January 27 to 29, 2025, among a sample of 1,428 randomly selected eligible voters via phone and online interviews.
