The German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) has released the latest data on the construction industry, revealing a decline in the real order intake in the main construction industry in April 2025. Compared to March 2025, the order intake decreased by 8.0 percent, calendar and seasonally adjusted. The order intake in high-rise construction, however, increased by 9.3 percent, while that in civil engineering declined by 20.6 percent.
The remarkable growth in civil engineering in March 2025, with a 34.3 percent increase over February 2025, marks the highest seasonally adjusted increase in the time series since 1991. In a three-month comparison, the real order intake from February 2025 to April 2025 increased by 2.1 percent, with high-rise construction seeing a 3.6 percent rise and civil engineering a 0.8 percent increase.
Compared to the same month in the previous year, the real, calendar-adjusted order intake in the main construction industry in April 2025 rose by 5.7 percent. High-rise construction saw a 16.2 percent increase, while civil engineering declined by 2.4 percent. The nominal order intake, on the other hand, was 6.1 percent higher than in the same month of the previous year.
The real turnover in the main construction industry decreased by 1.4 percent in April 2025 compared to the same month of the previous year, while the nominal turnover rose by 0.9 percent to 9.4 billion euros. Over the first four months of 2025, the turnover increased by 2.4 percent in real terms and 4.7 percent in nominal terms. The number of people employed in the main construction industry also increased by 0.9 percent in April 2025 compared to the same month of the previous year.
