Lufthansa Cuts 4000 Jobs by 2030

Lufthansa Group announced plans Monday to reduce its workforce by 4,000 employees by the end of the decade. The company stated that the majority of these reductions are expected to occur within Germany.

The restructuring will be implemented in coordination with employee representatives, with a focus on administrative roles rather than operational positions. Lufthansa intends to leverage digitalization and increased application of artificial intelligence to streamline processes and absorb some of the functions previously performed by personnel.

The company also indicated a review of redundancies, identifying tasks potentially eliminated due to overlapping responsibilities. Lufthansa has yet to fully recover from the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and its production capacity and productivity remain below pre-2019 levels. Previous cost-cutting measures, including significant job losses, were undertaken during that period.

Most recently, in mid-September, Lufthansa announced plans to consolidate central functions across its airlines. This includes the merging of network management for short- and medium-haul flights operated by Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines, slated to begin in January 2026.
