German Minister of Justice Stefanie Hubig Announces Family Law Reform
In a speech on International Children’s Day, German Minister of Justice Stefanie Hubig, a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), unveiled plans to reform the country’s family law. The minister emphasized the importance of not only love and care, but also good laws for children.
Hubig’s goal is to modernize the laws on custody, access and descent, with the aim of aligning the legal framework with the complex realities of modern family structures. The minister cited the examples of “patchwork families” separated families and families without a marriage certificate, highlighting the need for a more inclusive and adaptable legal system.
At the heart of the proposed reform, according to Hubig, must be the best interests of the child. The minister’s announcement signals a shift towards a more child-centric approach in German family law, with the aim of providing a more effective and supportive legal environment for all families.
