A German publication has reported that the Islamic State (IS) has allegedly encouraged the use of vehicles in attacks in Germany, among other countries. The warning is attributed to the discovery of a German-language propaganda website, Al Saif Media, which was recently brought to light.
The website, in question, explicitly mentions cities such as Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Vienna, Brussels, Antwerp and Salzburg as potential targets. The site features a street view from the perspective of a driver, with crosshairs on the heads of passersby and a navigation system displaying the message: “What are you waiting for? The streets are full of targets. Run them over!”
A state official, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that this type of incitement is spreading rapidly among Islamists and that the IS’s strategy of inspiring “lone wolves” to carry out attacks appears to be increasing, as demonstrated by recent attacks in Mannheim, Solingen, Aschaffenburg, Munich and Villach. The official noted that the perpetrators of these attacks were not previously considered potential threats.
In the context of the upcoming carnival season, security forces are expressing concern. “We must not be intimidated, but we also acknowledge that it is not possible to fully secure such large events and street festivals” the official warned.
Youth, in particular, are a concern for the security forces, as they are reportedly vulnerable to the IS’s propaganda on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. The official stated that, in recent months, numerous plots by minors have been foiled and that the IS is specifically targeting young, radicalized Muslims through personal messages on Instagram profiles.
