Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota, who plays for Liverpool FC, has died in a car accident in northwestern Spain, local fire and police authorities confirmed on Thursday.
The incident occurred early Thursday morning when the vehicle reportedly veered off the road for unknown reasons and subsequently caught fire. Emergency medical services at the scene could only confirm the deaths of the two occupants of the vehicle: Jota and his brother. The 28-year-old striker had married just ten days prior.
The accident took place at kilometer 65 of the A-52 highway, heading towards Benavente. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze, which had spread to the surrounding vegetation and worked in coordination with rescue services and the Guardia Civil. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
