Lindner's Ultimatum?

In the aftermath of the deadly knife attack in Aschaffenburg, FDP leader Christian Lindner is urging for a swift agreement with Afghanistan to facilitate the repatriation of its nationals. “The next federal government must immediately enter into talks with Afghanistan and, as soon as possible, also with Syria, to enforce the exit obligations of their citizens” he told the Funke Media Group (Friday editions).

It cannot be that the Austrian government is negotiating a repatriation agreement in Kabul, while Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) and Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) can only express concern, Lindner said.

A 28-year-old asylum seeker with Afghan citizenship is suspected of killing a two-year-old boy and a 41-year-old man with a knife. It is a pattern of origin, previous notoriety, and unfulfilled departure obligations, Lindner said. “This state of affairs must end. We must immediately expand the detention of deportees and pre-trial detention in such cases.
