Concerns are mounting over a rise in incidents at swimming pools across Germany, prompting criticism directed at parents’ attentiveness. Peter Harzheim, president of the Federal Association of German Swimming Masters (BDS), has voiced his concerns, highlighting a growing trend of parents prioritizing mobile phone use over supervising their children within pool environments. He described such distractions as “a plague” in an interview with the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung.
Harzheim expressed frustration over the increasing expectation placed on lifeguards and swimming instructors. He noted that parents are increasingly treating pool staff as “kindergarten attendants” a role he insists falls outside their duties. Maintaining a safe and enjoyable experience for all pool users and ensuring general safety are primary responsibilities, but not the expectation of constant supervision of children.
Recent data from the German Life Saving Society reveal a disturbing upward trend in aquatic-related fatalities. In 2024, a total of 411 individuals lost their lives in such incidents, a significant increase of 112 compared to 2021. This increase underscores the urgent need for greater parental vigilance and responsible behavior around water.
