Liberal Boost: FDP Pledges 3 Billion for Ukraine

According to FDP leader Christian Lindner, the Liberals are ready to support a possible three-billion-euro package for Ukraine in the German Bundestag still within this legislative period. “We signaled our approval for additional Ukraine aid of three billion euros in November” Lindner told the newspapers of the Bayern Media Group. This sum can be financed without breaking the debt brake by using an extraordinary expense. “This can be done, for example, as an extraordinary expenditure.”

Lindner accuses Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) of blocking the aid. “The whole process reveals Scholz’s maneuver in November: He wanted to secure 15 billion euros of new debt outside the debt brake from me to give three billion of that to Ukraine. That’s what broke the coalition. Now that he is blocking the Ukraine aid, it shows that the chancellor’s priorities do not lie with Ukraine.”

Scholz wanted “to continue his failed economic policy with even more debt, instead of doing something for the country’s prosperity and growth with a economic turnaround” the FDP leader said.
