The home team then failed to put the result beyond doubt, but the 1-0 margin proved sufficient to secure the win.
Leverkusen’s victory, which keeps them in the title race, has left them with 38 points, while Mainz, who finished with 28 points, remains in fifth place. Leverkusen will face Mönchengladbach on Saturday, while Mainz travels to face Union Berlin on Sunday.
