German Farmers’ Association President Sees Industry as Prepared for Climate Changes, but Demands More Entrepreneurial Freedom

The president of the German Farmers’ Association, Joachim Rukwied, believes that German farmers are generally well-prepared to adapt to climate changes. However, he is urging the new German government to grant them more entrepreneurial freedom to thrive on the European internal market. “We need to be trusted as entrepreneurs and simply be allowed to do our job” he told the Bayern Media Group.

Rukwied also expressed his critical view of the minimum wage increase to 15 euros, calling for a special solution for seasonal foreign workers who come to Germany for a few months. He expects the new government to implement a program that allows all businesses to invest in animal welfare, but also notes that solutions are needed for specific crops like arable farming, wine production and special cultures.

The president mentioned the importance of access to innovations, such as new breeding techniques and available pesticides, as examples. According to Rukwied, the new agricultural minister must strike a balance between competitiveness and food security on one side and the protection of the climate and the preservation of biodiversity on the other. He is willing to support the new minister in achieving this balance.
