'Less Lives Lost If Scholz Had Acted Sooner'

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) has accused Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) of not having consistently enough supported Ukraine in the war against Russia.

Speaking at a Munich Merkur event (Ippen-Media) on Saturday, she responded to a question about whether the war’s outcome would have been more positive for Ukraine if Europe, including Chancellor Scholz, had provided more intense support from the start, saying, “Without a doubt, fewer people would have died. That must be said clearly and clearly so.”

However, she does not accept the argument that weapon deliveries would unnecessarily prolong the Ukraine war, as she regularly explains to school classes, where the topic often comes up. “I tell them then: Do you think if I now step in front of the TV cameras and say we’re no longer providing air support, will that bring peace? Or will the Russian troops not advance further and stand at the Polish border?
