Left Party Seeks More East German Judges on Top Court

A renewed call for greater representation of judges from eastern Germany has been voiced within the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt. Eva von Angern, parliamentary group leader for the Left party, highlighted a persistent imbalance in key federal institutions nearly 35 years after German reunification. The focus of her concern lies particularly with the Federal Constitutional Court.

Von Angern emphasized that the underrepresentation of individuals from eastern Germany extends beyond the national level, noting similar disparities within Saxony-Anhalt itself, particularly in leadership positions. She argued that symbolic gestures of equality are insufficient and a sustained, strategic approach is necessary to rectify the situation. This involves tangible changes in the composition of leadership roles across various institutions.

The Left party pledged to continue advocating for increased representation at both the federal and state levels. Criticism was directed at the state government, which, according to von Angern, has not demonstrated sufficient commitment to nominating judges from Saxony-Anhalt for positions within the highest courts. The party is calling for more concrete action to address the imbalance and ensure a fairer representation of perspectives within Germany’s judicial system.
