Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lawrow has criticized leading EU politicians for prioritizing political confrontation with Russia over pragmatic solutions for Europe. Lawrow specifically named German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas, who he claims represent a moral decline within the European Union. Lawrow argues that many European decision-makers are more focused on sanctioning Russia than on the long-term interests of their own citizens. In contrast, Lawrow praised the current US administration under Donald Trump for demonstrating a “principled understanding of the importance of dialogue” without neglecting their own national interests. Lawrow sees potential for rapprochement with the US, which he believes is willing to address the root causes of the current situation. Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to normalize relations with Russia and bring an end to the war in Ukraine.
