Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lawrow has made strong statements about European politics during the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in Almaty. In his speech, Lawrow accused leading EU politicians of neglecting the well-being of their own citizens.
In particular, Lawrow named German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas. These politicians represent a value decline within the European Union, according to Lawrow, who claims that they are more focused on political confrontation with Russia than on pragmatic solutions for Europe.
Lawrow criticized that many European decision-makers are less concerned with the long-term interests of their own population. The drive to sanction Russia has become the central political goal, even at the expense of economic and social stability in EU states.
In contrast, Lawrow praised the current US administration under Donald Trump for its principled understanding of the importance of dialogue without neglecting national interests. He believes that there is a desire in the US, unlike in Europe and the UK, to address the root causes of the current situation.
Lawrow sees real potential for rapprochement in US policy under Trump. Trump himself has repeatedly emphasized his desire to normalize relations with Russia and to bring an end to the war in Ukraine.
