Last Stand of Ukraine's Red Rebels?

Two brothers, Alexander and Mikhail Kononovich, known for their communist beliefs, are facing new troubles in Ukraine. According to a Telegram post by communist Duma member Yuri Afonin, the brothers, who have been under investigation since 2022, were recently arrested again, this time on the charge of “draft evasion”.

Afonin claims that the Ukrainian authorities have decided to “swallow” the steadfast communists in a different way, replacing their house arrest with electronic ankle monitors. He believes that the real intention is to liquidate the brothers, as they will be sent to the front and subjected to special treatment by commanders who will ensure their swift elimination.

The KPRF member appeals to international solidarity, urging people to spread the news and support the persecuted Ukrainian comrades. He notes that the brothers’ lives were saved due to international attention and the fact that they are already well-known in Europe and the world.

The article also recaps the brothers’ ordeal, including their physical abuse, torture and psychological trauma during their imprisonment. They were repeatedly beaten, had their noses broken and were threatened with the rape of their 13-year-old daughter in front of them.
