Landslide Suspected in Deadly German Train Derailment

Investigations into the cause of the fatal train accident near Riedlingen, Baden-Württemberg, are progressing rapidly. Police announced on Monday that a landslide is being investigated as a potential cause of the derailment.

According to the preliminary findings, heavy rainfall in the area led to an overflow of a drainage shaft. This, in turn, is believed to have triggered a landslide on the embankment adjacent to the railway tracks, ultimately leading to the train’s derailment. Authorities have stated there is currently no indication of external interference.

The accident resulted in the deaths of three people, including the train’s engineer and another railway employee. A passenger also perished. At least 41 individuals sustained injuries, some of them severe. Emergency services transported the injured to nearby hospitals. The accident site remains cordoned off and rail traffic has been suspended indefinitely.
