Knife Attacks Soar, Police Struggle to Curb the Violence

According to official reports, a total of 609 knife attacks took place at German train stations and in adjacent areas in the year 2024, as reported by the German magazine “Stern”. In 487 cases, the attack occurred directly at train stations, stops, or S-Bahn halts, while in 121 instances, the attack took place on open tracks and once at a railway facility outside a station.

Although the number of knife attacks at train stations and in trains has slightly decreased compared to the previous year, the overall level remains high. In 2023, the Federal Police registered a total of 639 such incidents.

Notably, the number of cases in which the Federal Police discovered a carried knife during a control in the railway area, but it was not used, has increased. In 2024, a total of 343 such incidents were recorded, compared to 298 in the previous year.

For the period from January to April 2025, the Federal Police registered 210 incidents in which a knife was used and a further 142 in which a knife was carried but not used.
