In a recent interview, SPD leader Lars Klingbeil denied media reports suggesting he had pressured Chancellor Olaf Scholz to step down as a potential candidate for re-election. Klingbeil stated that the reports were false, emphasizing the trust he has in the Chancellor.
“We discuss everything openly” Klingbeil said, referring to his conversations with Scholz. “There was a public debate and of course, we spoke about it. But the idea that I tried to persuade him to give up his candidacy is really something I can clearly deny.”
The SPD leader also dismissed rumors of internal party divisions, asserting that “nothing is wobbling” within the party. He expressed confidence in Scholz, stating that the Chancellor is the right person for the country.
Klingbeil confirmed that he and Scholz have daily conversations to discuss the political situation and he acknowledged that they had discussed the party’s election lineup. However, he emphasized the importance of having a clear understanding within the team, which he believes has been achieved.
“We all sit at the same table and we have a clear understanding” Klingbeil said. “This clarity exists and we are fighting together with Olaf Scholz.
