Germany is set to intensify its efforts to combat welfare and tax fraud, according to statements made by Lars Klingbeil, Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and Federal Minister of Finance.
Speaking to the Funke Media Group publications, Klingbeil indicated a stricter approach will be taken towards individuals receiving social welfare benefits while simultaneously engaging in undeclared work. He stated that sanctions will be increased for those who fail to comply with regulations, framing the issue as a matter of fairness. “It is unfair when people receive money from the state and do nothing” he said.
The Minister of Finance also emphasized that efforts will be directed towards tackling tax evasion amongst high-income earners. “We have begun the fight against tax fraud, welfare fraud and undeclared work” he stated, adding that laws will be strengthened and controls intensified, particularly within the customs authorities.
Klingbeil assured that the government is not simply rebranding existing social programs, but actively working to address systemic issues and ensure responsible use of public funds. He signaled a commitment to rigorous enforcement and accountability across all levels of the system.
