Klima Cash Cut, Education in Jeopardy!

Klima Cash Cut, Education in Jeopardy!

A joint press statement by FPÖ and ÖVP has revealed the results of their ongoing coalition talks. The parties aim to quickly sanitize the Austrian budget, which is under significant pressure due to high deficits. After reaching an agreement, they have outlined a seven-year plan to balance the budget without resorting to new deficit procedures, accompanied by a 6.3 billion euro package of measures.

According to FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl, the deficit procedures were averted thanks to a swift agreement, without the need for new taxes. The budget will continue to be refined over the coming weeks. A central goal of the austerity plan is the elimination of the climate bonus, with cuts also planned for the education leave.

ÖVP leader Christian Stocker emphasized the need for speed in the negotiations to address the critical budget situation. Despite his critical stance towards FPÖ during the election campaign, Stocker is now working alongside Kickl to form a new government.

In addition to the austerity plan, security policy concerns must also be taken into account. Stocker acknowledged that there are international concerns regarding a “blue” Chancellor, particularly in relation to Austria’s foreign policy and support for Ukraine. These issues are still not fully resolved.

The talks between FPÖ and ÖVP are ongoing, and although a final coalition has not been established, both parties are working to address the most pressing issues: budget consolidation and ensuring Austria’s competitiveness.
