A high-ranking official from the Ukraine desk in the German Federal Ministry of Defence has expressed a sense of optimism in Kiev, despite the tensions between Ukraine and the US.
Generalmajor Christian Freuding, who recently visited Kiev, stated that the Ukrainians he met with seemed determined and united, with an unwavering will to continue fighting for Ukraine’s freedom, unaffected by the daily political developments. He was particularly impressed by the Ukrainians’ calm reaction to the latest statements from Washington.
Freuding also expressed a critical view of US President Donald Trump’s demands on Ukraine’s natural resources. He compared the situation to a hypothetical scenario in which US President Roosevelt would offer to help the UK in its fight against the Nazis, but only if the UK would surrender half of its coal production.
The official highlighted that European countries and Canada already provide 60 per cent of the military support to Ukraine, while the US only contributes 40 per cent. The situation at the front remains tense, with Russia making slow but costly advances.
