Justice Served: Man's Life Sentence Upheld for Brutal Attacks on Women

A German court has upheld a life sentence for a man found guilty of a series of violent attacks on women in the state of Lower Saxony. The Federal Court of Justice (Bundesgerichtshof) rejected the appeal of the defendant against the verdict of the Verden Regional Court, as announced by the court on Tuesday.

The Regional Court had convicted the man of murder, attempted murder and attempted murder in the form of grievous bodily harm, as well as attempted murder in the form of a deliberate and dangerous interference with public traffic. The court also found the defendant’s guilt to be particularly severe and ordered his placement in a secure custody facility.

According to the findings of the Regional Court, the defendant in September 2023 killed an unknown young woman with multiple stab wounds and severely injured another woman. He also drove a vehicle towards a third woman, who suffered severe injuries in the resulting collision.

The review of the verdict by the 4th Criminal Senate, which was prompted by the defendant’s appeal, did not reveal a substantial legal error that would be detrimental to the defendant, the Karlsruhe judges ruled. The Verden Regional Court’s verdict is thus final (Decision of May 21, 2025 – 4 StR 34/25).
