Jusos Demand Union to End Incompatibility with The Left

Philipp Türmer, the leader of the Social Democratic Youth Organization (Juso), has called on the Union to enable a permanent political cooperation with the Left Party in the Bundestag. In an interview with the “Handelsblatt” (Wednesday edition), he stated, “The Union constantly calls for all democratic parties to work together. I share this view explicitly, which is why it is time for the CDU to bury their incompatibility resolution with the Left Party.”

According to Türmer, sticking to the incompatibility resolution is “dangerous for our society.” He argued that the Left Party is a democratic party, just like the SPD and should be treated as such. He reminded that a constructive cooperation with the Left Party was needed to end the chaos during the Chancellor election.

The Left Party is also needed when two-thirds majorities are required in the Bundestag, such as when the federal government wants to reform the debt brake. Türmer said that all democratic parties in the Bundestag, from the Union to the Left Party, must come together for the agreed-upon reform of the debt brake. “This is also part of the necessary truth to make this country fit for the future, regardless of whether it appeals to the CDU” he added.

Sebastian Roloff, a member of the SPD Federal Board, also hopes for a change of heart from the Union, after the Chancellor election showed that “collegial agreements with the Left Party” are possible. “I assume that they already have a plan on how to deal with the situation regarding the reform of the debt brake” said the Bundestag member to the “Handelsblatt.” “Anything else would be very amateurish, as the majority conditions in the Bundestag were known during the coalition negotiations.
