The SPD Basis votes in favor of the coalition agreement with the Union, despite Juso’s call for rejection
The Juso (the youth wing of the Social Democratic Party of Germany) has accepted the SPD Basis’ vote in favor of the coalition agreement with the Union, despite their previous call for rejection. According to Juso President Philipp Türmer, “the members have voted and decided in favor of this coalition agreement in a very challenging democratic situation.” Although they had campaigned for a different outcome, the Juso will accept the result.
However, more than just Juso members expressed their concerns about this coalition agreement. This shows that the SPD now needs to prioritize social issues in the coalition. “This was a vote on a coalition agreement, not on the orientation of the party” said Türmer. The task of programmatic reorientation will now begin. “We must become the party of work again and we will bring our full energy into this process” Juso leader Türmer announced.
