Following a virtual crisis meeting held Friday evening, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) remains committed to nominating Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf as a candidate for the Federal Constitutional Court. According to reports in “Der Tagesspiegel”, the meeting, attended by members of the SPD’s executive committee and parliamentary group, signaled a strong internal consensus around Brosius-Gersdorf’s candidacy.
Sources within the party indicate the onus is now on the opposition, specifically the CDU/CSU alliance, to secure the necessary majority for her appointment. Discussions during the meeting saw considerable backing for rejecting any proposal to split the proposed slate of appointments.
The SPD is reportedly keen to avoid prolonging the uncertainty surrounding Brosius-Gersdorf’s nomination and is currently considering a special session of the Bundestag, potentially as early as August, to facilitate a parliamentary vote. The party intends to ensure Brosius-Gersdorf is available for direct and transparent discussions with the leadership of the CDU/CSU.
