Jewish Emigration Considered if AfD Joins Coalition

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of the war, President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Josef Schuster, expresses concern about the rise of the AfD in the Bund. According to Schuster, the far-right party’s potential entry into government would be difficult to reconcile with Jewish life in Germany.

In an interview with the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” on Thursday, Schuster stated that if this were to happen, he and the Central Council would have to ask themselves if they should urge Jewish people in Germany to emigrate. In such a case, the Central Council might need to support these individuals in their departure. Schuster hopes that this scenario will not come to pass. However, if it does, the question arises of what other credible signals can be given to ensure that Jewish life in Germany can still be seen as secure.
