Germany’s Coalition Urged to Move Swiftly on Citizen’s Allowance Reform
The leader of the Christian Democratic Union’s (CDU) parliamentary group, Jens Spahn, has called on the coalition to accelerate the reform of the citizen’s allowance. In an interview with the Rheinische Post, Spahn emphasized that the question of whether it is worth working should no longer even arise in the future. He cited the misuse of the system, particularly in the Ruhr region, as an example of the need for reform.
Spahn noted that the idea that those who can work should work is a shared goal among politicians, including Lars Klingbeil and Friedrich Merz. He expressed confidence that the Social Democratic Party (SPD) will deliver on its commitment to the reform, as outlined in the coalition agreement, which was endorsed by 85 percent of SPD members.
