Israel Signals Limited Room for Gaza Deal Talks

Israel is prioritizing a swift resolution to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, aiming for a rapid agreement to secure the release of hostages, according to Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar. Speaking in Jerusalem, Sa’ar emphasized the country’s determination to reach a deal that would facilitate the return of the hostages and subsequently lead to a ceasefire.

As part of this potential agreement, Israel would reportedly be prepared to withdraw its troops a certain distance and release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli custody. The timeframe for the transfer of 48 Israeli hostages, previously mentioned by US President Donald Trump, would commence from the moment an agreement is finalized. Sa’ar suggested that the initial phase of the proposed plan focuses primarily on this exchange.

While acknowledging the complexities of negotiations with Hamas, Sa’ar stated that Israel’s commitment to the agreement is contingent on Hamas fulfilling its obligations, notably the disarmament of the organization. He underscored that any understanding is a reciprocal arrangement, requiring adherence from all parties involved.

Sa’ar expressed skepticism regarding Hamas’s intentions, stating a lack of trust in the organization itself, while conveying confidence in President Trump, the United States and international actors involved in the negotiation efforts. He further indicated that Israel does not anticipate room for further negotiations regarding elements of the proposed plan beyond the initial hostage release phase. The Minister stressed that any deviation from agreed-upon terms would necessitate a reassessment of Israel’s commitments.
