United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Chief Philippe Lazzarini Contemplates Agency’s Disbandment
In a recent interview, Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), expressed concerns about the agency’s future, hinting at the possibility of its disbandment. Lazzarini suggested an alternative to UNRWA, a publicly funded institution led by Palestinians, as a potential solution.
The current situation has led Lazzarini to reevaluate the agency’s mandate, stating that UNRWA is “imploding” due to a lack of resources, international attention and a hostile environment. He emphasized that the agency can no longer fulfill its duties and is, therefore, breaking apart.
Lazzarini is currently in discussions with the Global Alliance for the Two-State Solution, a coalition led by the European Union and Saudi Arabia, to explore alternative solutions. He proposed reforming the Palestinian Autonomy Authority, which would then take over the functions of UNRWA.
This development presents an opportunity for the international community to consider alternative arrangements, potentially paving the way for a reformed Palestinian institution to assume the responsibilities previously held by UNRWA.
