The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael Roth (SPD), has rejected US President Donald Trump’s Gaza plans as “contrary to international law”. “Trump’s proposal leads to land grab, ethnic cleansing and colonialism” Roth told the “Tagesspiegel” (Wednesday’s edition).
It is a “plan contrary to international law” that is rejected by the Palestinians and the moderate Arab states. “The displacement of two million people will neither bring peace nor stability, but rather increase the suffering and further destabilize the region. Moreover, it endangers the hostage deal and the release of the remaining hostages from the hands of the Hamas terrorists” he said.
No single country in the region is willing to take in Palestinian refugees, not least due to the justified concern of bringing in terrorism to their own country, the SPD politician stated. A sustainable solution for peace and security will only be possible, “when the moderate Arab states are involved and willing to take on more responsibility for the security in the Palestinian territories.”
Germany’s long-term interest remains a two-state solution, said Roth: “However, we must think creatively: the Hamas must not regain control over the Gaza Strip again.” An international administration under the leadership of the US and moderate Arab states could provide medium-term security and stability. “This could also pave the way for normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia” Roth added.
