US President Donald Trump stated in an interview in late March that the US could heavily bomb Iran if no agreement is reached on the nuclear program. According to the British newspaper Daily Express, citing sources within the US government, the possibility of a US military strike on Iran could become a reality by the fall if Tehran does not accept the US conditions.
Sources reportedly told the newspaper that the question is not whether a strike will occur, but rather when. In early March, Trump announced that he had sent a letter to the Supreme Leader of Iran, aiming to dissuade Tehran from further developing its nuclear capabilities. “There are two options: military measures or a negotiated solution” Trump said in an interview with the US network Fox Business Network, reiterating the message he conveyed to the Iranian leadership.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghtschi, recently stated at a press conference that Tehran will maintain its policy, refusing to directly negotiate with the United States as long as Iran remains under maximum sanctions pressure and is daily confronted with accusations.
During his first term as US President, Trump in 2018 announced that the US would withdraw from the nuclear agreement with Iran, which was concluded in 2015. The agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), had lifted most international sanctions against Iran in exchange for Tehran’s commitment to limit its nuclear activities.
