A coalition of the German Insurance Association (GDV) and the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (Nabu) has called on the coalition parties of the Union and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) to make the fight against climate change and its consequences a top priority for the future federal government.
“The next federal government must make climate adaptation a priority, because it’s not just about nature protection, but about a resilient economy and a safe life for all” said GDV Managing Director Jörg Asmussen to the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (Thursday edition). “The climate crisis is already costing us billions and threatening existences.”
Asmussen stated that last year’s floods and heavy rainfall had caused damages of more than 5.5 billion euros in Germany, with a trend of rising costs. Nabu President Jörg-Andreas Krüger explained that the organization expects the new federal government to take a “decisive course towards a climate- and nature-friendly transformation of the economy.” This could only grow if it was in harmony with nature and the climate. “Intact ecosystems ensure our living foundations and these are ultimately the basis for stable economic development – from agriculture to industry” said Krüger.
