SPD General Secretary Matthias Miersch does not consider it unfair that the SPD continues to warn of a black-green coalition, even though CDU leader Friedrich Merz has repeatedly ruled it out.
The question of whether this accusation by the SPD borders on malicious rumor-mongering was denied by Miersch: “Because his actions speak for themselves in the present” he told RTL and ntv. “Although he has promised that there will be no cooperation, he broke that promise twice last week and now says that there can be no compromises at many points.”
These guarantees significantly complicated the possibility of a CDU-led coalition after the election. “If Friedrich Merz continues like this, he’s shooting himself in the foot” Miersch said. “I hope, however, that people will recognize what’s at stake.” The weekend’s demonstrations have given him courage and he hopes “that people will also see that Friedrich Merz is certainly not the suitable Chancellor for the Federal Republic of Germany and we will see very different results on February 23 than the ones that are currently visible in the polls.
