Insa Poll: Over Half of Germans Want to Ban Right-Wing Extremist AfD Party

According to a survey conducted by Insa for Bild am Sonntag, the majority of Germans support the banning of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) after it was classified as a right-wing extremist party by the Federal Agency for the Protection of the Constitution. The survey found that 48% of respondents believe that the AfD should now be banned, while 37% are against it and 15% are unsure.

The survey also revealed that 61% of Germans view the AfD as a right-wing extremist party, while 31% do not and 8% are unsure. Additionally, 35% of respondents think that banning the AfD would benefit democracy in Germany, 39% believe it would harm democracy and 16% expect no impact.

The new assessment of the AfD by the Federal Agency for the Protection of the Constitution has changed the opinion of 10% of respondents, while 79% of respondents said that their opinion on the AfD has not changed. 41% believe that the debate on banning the AfD helps, while 22% think it has no impact or will harm the party.

The survey was conducted by the opinion research institute Insa, which surveyed a total of 1,001 people from May 2nd to May 3rd, 2025.
