According to a survey, the Union’s voter support has increased. If there were a federal election on Sunday, the CDU/CSU would receive 27% (+1), according to an Infratest survey for the ARD “Deutschlandtrend”. The AfD would lose a point and achieve 23%. The SPD would remain at 16%, the Greens at 11% and the Linke would remain unchanged at 10%. The BSW and FDP would also remain unchanged at 4%, making them unlikely to enter Parliament. All other parties would add up to 5%.
The survey suggests that the new government is viewed positively by only a few. Four percent consider the new Union-SPD government to be very good, 38% good, 29% less good and 24% bad. Union supporters (79%) and SPD supporters (74%) mostly view the government positively.
The public’s opinion of the start of the Ampel coalition was more positive: 53% considered this government to be very good or good, while 43% considered it less good or bad.
Friedrich Merz, the new Chancellor of the Union, is considered a good choice by one-third of the population (32%), while the majority (59%) believes he is not a good choice as Chancellor.
Boris Pistorius, the new Minister of Defense from the SPD, is considered a good choice by a majority (73% of the population). Lars Klingbeil, the new Finance Minister from the SPD, is viewed positively by 43% and negatively by 34%. Bärbel Bas, the new Labor Minister, is viewed positively by 36% and negatively by 26%. Alexander Dobrindt, the new Interior Minister from the CSU, is viewed positively by 35% and negatively by 42%.
The survey also suggests that the public is unsure about the appointments in the foreign and economic ministries.
The survey was conducted by Infratest, polling a total of 1,325 people from May 5th to 6th, 2025.
