The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) has confirmed the inflation rate for April 2025 at 2.1 percent. A corresponding estimate was published earlier in April. In March 2025, it stood at +2.2 percent and in January and February 2025, it was +2.3 percent.
According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the price development for energy in April 2025 significantly reduced the inflation rate. On the other hand, the price increase for food also contributed to inflation in April 2025. Moreover, the above-average price hikes in services continued to intensify. Compared to the previous month, March 2025, consumer prices rose by 0.4 percent in April 2025.
The prices for energy products were 5.4 percent lower in April 2025 compared to the same month the previous year. The price decline was significantly higher than in the previous months. In March 2025, it was still at -2.8 percent and before that, from December 2024 to February 2025, it was at -1.6 percent. Over the past year, the prices for gasoline (-8.3 percent) and household energy (-3.4 percent) decreased. Consumers could especially benefit from cheaper prices for electricity (-2.5 percent), wood, wood pellets, or other fuels (-4.6 percent) and light heating oil (-12.8 percent). However, the price of heating with steam was slightly higher than the previous year (+0.2 percent).
The prices for food were 2.8 percent higher in April 2025 compared to the same month the previous year, after +3.0 percent in March 2025. The upward trend in food prices has slightly moderated, but it still remained above the overall inflation rate in April 2025. From April 2024 to April 2025, the prices for fruit (+6.0 percent) and vegetables (+5.6 percent) increased significantly. There were also above-average price hikes for edible oils (+4.4 percent), milk products and eggs (+3.8 percent) and sugar, jams, honey and other sweets (+3.7 percent). However, there was a notably below-average price increase for some food groups, such as meat and meat products (+1.3 percent), bread and cereal products (+0.7 percent) and fish, fish products and seafood (+0.1 percent).
Without energy, the inflation rate in April 2025 was +2.8 percent. The inflation rate without considering food and energy, often referred to as core inflation, was +2.9 percent in April 2025. Both indicators have been above the overall inflation rate for over a year, indicating that inflation was exceptionally high in other important sectors.
The prices for services in total were 3.9 percent higher than in the same month the previous year. The increase in service prices has intensified again (March 2025: +3.5 percent). From April 2024 to April 2025, prices increased significantly in the transportation sector, such as for package tours (+9.2 percent), combined passenger transport (+11.3 percent) and flight tickets (+19.1 percent). There were also above-average price hikes in the areas of care and health, such as for services of social institutions (+9.4 percent) and for stationary health services (+6.5 percent). Many other services were also significantly more expensive than the previous year, such as insurance (+8.9 percent), postal and parcel services (+8.2 percent), vehicle maintenance and repair (+5.7 percent) and hotel and restaurant services (+4.2 percent). Net rental prices were +2.1 percent. Only a few services became cheaper compared to the previous year, such as telecommunications services (-1.2 percent).
Overall, goods became 0.5 percent more expensive from April 2024 to April 2025. In March 2025, the inflation rate was +1.0 percent. In April 2025, the prices for consumer goods and for durable goods increased by +0.5 percent each. In addition to the price increase for food (+2.8 percent), some other goods became significantly more expensive, such as non-alcoholic beverages (+6.2 percent), tobacco products (+4.6 percent) and cars (+3.5 percent). Price decreases were also observed, except for energy (-5.4 percent), such as for mobile phones (-8.1 percent) and information processing devices (-5.4 percent).
Compared to March 2025, the consumer price index increased by 0.4 percent in April 2025. Within the month, prices for flights (+21.0 percent), package tours (+5.5 percent) and fresh vegetables (+3.0 percent) increased significantly. The prices for food in total remained almost stable (+0.1 percent) within the month. However, energy prices in total decreased by 0.6 percent compared to the previous month, with gasoline (-0.8 percent) and light heating oil (-2.5 percent) becoming cheaper, according to the statisticians.
